FreeStyle Classes:
Learn to create well made clothes that fit and flatter.
In these classes you can bring a project of your own choice, and work at your own pace as you learn the techniques needed to complete it in a professional manner.
Class sizes are small and friendly, with lots of personal attention from myself, and support from fellow learners.
Methods taught are based on industrial methods adapted to home sewing equipment. My goal is to help you develop a range of skills and strategies that can be adapted to any garment, rather than teaching patterns by pattern.
Classes are held in my studio, where I also design and produce garments professionally. I have various equipment available for use, such as overlockers and dressmaking dummies, as well as an extensive resource library available for students to refer to in class.
I have an emphasis on fitting well, and introduce simple adjustments at an early stage, to ensure success with every garment, and I encourage students to see patterns as starting points for their own creativity. Simple changes can have a big impact - I made the same blouse pattern eight times one year, and nobody noticed!
Classes are ongoing, so you may join at any time.
What to bring:
Supplies as required for your project - fabric, pattern, good quality sewing thread to match, notions etc.
I stock a small retail range of basic supplies such as basic thread colours, thread snips, sewing machine needles and spare bobbins, as well as a large number of vintage buttons and some vintage fabrics.
Sewing machine - if you don't have one yet, let me know so I can arrange for one to be available. It's best to learn on your own machine so I can help you get the best out of it - they all have their own personality. Please ensure that it is in good working order, for everybody's safety and to avoid lost class time.
Basic equipment kit, if you have one. I have most equipment necessary available, so there is no need to buy a full kit before the first lesson if you are just starting. I can advise which equipment you will need as you go. Please remember to mark any equipment with your name, and as you tidy up to leave, double check you have everything. Chaos descends rapidly in creative spaces, although I do hang any forgotten items on the wall as soon as I spot them!
